What is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day (also called Decoration Day) is a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates America’s fallen veterans who sacrificed their lives in fulfilling their duties to serve their country. On this day, we spend time reflecting on the courageous acts of these heroes and honor them for giving us a better place to live today with the liberty that we all possess. These valuable gifts cost the lives of our military heroes.

The holiday is celebrated every last Monday of May. This year (2021), it falls on the 31st of May. Aside from honoring the heroic deeds of these veterans, it is also the unofficial start of summer in the United States.

How is Memorial Day observed?

As a tradition, people attend patriotic events, visit cemeteries to pay respect and show gratitude and put American flags on the graves at the national cemeteries. At 3 in the afternoon, the country holds a national moment of remembrance.

Throughout the years, Memorial Day has become a custom for decorating the graves of the fallen soldiers. They often decorate the graves with flowers and flags to express patriotism to the country.

Aside from visiting cemeteries, it has been an occasion for family reunions and picnics because this marks the unofficial start of summer.
